Self Injury Awareness Day

March 1st is Self Injury Awareness Day.

SIAD is a global awareness day, and yet it is not supported by any nations' governments, because it is a grass-roots idea. Somehow, in the mists of time, the date was set as the 1st of March, and organisations around the world make extra efforts to raise awareness ready for SIAD.

The colour for some reason is orange. Some people wear an orange ribbon, but in the past SIAD bracelets have been worn:

Plain Orange - Self Harm (Awareness) or if you Self Harm
Orange with 1 white - Trying to stop Self Harm
Orange and White - Recovered Self Harmer
White - You never Self Harmed but you understand
Yellow and Orange - Suicidal and Self Harm
Blue and Red - Depression/Mental Illness and Eating Disorders

I have never heard of this! I wouldn't mind wearing a ribbon, but the diff. colors, for diff. things would be intimidating. I wouldn't want everyone to know my personal experience with it. I would like it better if there was just one ribbon, so you can support the cause, without saying to people you don't know or trust, "I struggle with this." :shame:

yeah thanx Brina.... Couldn't we just where the white, and say we understand it.... i mean, si is a touchy subject..... a lot of people don't understand the depths of it.... so we couldn't/maybe some could voice, "yeah, i am a cutter, and......" you know, the i use to ribbons wouldn't be too bad.... no, yes it would, cause i don't even tell people... i have seen reactions from outsiders when i say i know someone who does this, and they look at me in utter disgust..... sigh...... i am glad they have this day though.... i agree that health providers should support this...... ok enough said... susie going on and on and on once again.... sorry...
thanks Brina should have been enough (bag over head)

thanks brina..I wasn't aware of the awareness day! I am not sure if I could wear such a personal ribbon..just a general one yes..but to say I struggle with something or have struggled..that would be hard....I agree...more awareness needs to be put out there about all mental illness period. it is such a shameful struggle unfortunately.

Hey...I saw someone wearing a white bracelet today...didn't ask him about it, but it made me wonder. I've seen a lot of disgust on the faces of some of my colleagues when I mention self-injury in general terms. It's sad, but a huge number of medical professionals just don't have a clue...Thanks Brina!
